Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit mantrī, mantrin.
Etymology: < Sanskrit mantrī, nominative singular of mantrin counsellor, minister < man- to think (see mantra n.). Compare mandarin n.1, Mentri n.
In South and South-East Asia: any of various functionaries or officials; spec. (in the former Malay states) a minister or local chieftain; (in Indonesia, including the former Dutch East Indies) a minor official or subordinate functionary vested with some authority. Cf. Mentri n.
