Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin maltha.
Etymology: < classical Latin maltha, malta mixture of pitch or lime with fat or wax (also applied to a kind of natural bitumen) < ancient Greek μάλθα , μάλθη mixture of wax and pitch, perhaps < μαλθακός (see malthacite n.). Compare Middle French, French malthe (1556; in Du Pinet's Pliny (1562) as maltha).
1. A kind of cement made by mixing pitch or lime with wax, fat, or sand, and other ingredients. Obsolete.

1847 A. C. Smeaton Builder's Pocket Man. (new ed.) 123 Maltha, or Greek Mastic. This is made by mixing lime and sand..and making it into a proper consistency with milk or size, instead of water.
2. Originally: a viscid form of bitumen. Later: any of various softish, viscid forms of natural asphalt (also called mineral tar).
