释义

Malthusianadj.n.

Brit. /malˈθjuːzɪən/, U.S. /mɔlˈθuziən/, /mɔlˈθuʒən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Malthus , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Thomas Robert Malthus (1766–1834), English economist and demographer + -ian suffix.
A. adj.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Thomas Malthus or his teaching.Malthus in his Essay on Population (1798) contended that the rate of increase of the population, being geometrical, will tend to exceed the (arithmetical) increase in its means of subsistence, and should therefore be checked, mainly by sexual restraint. This has often been popularly viewed as a proposal to place controls upon marriage (cf. also neo-Malthusian adj. and n.).
