Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manicātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin manicātus provided with long sleeves < manica (see manica n.) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare earlier manicated adj.
Botany. rare.
Of a surface: covered with hairs so thickly matted together that they can be removed in a single mass. Of hairs: forming a covering of this kind.

1832 J. Lindley Introd. Bot. 39 Hairs also give the following names to the surface of any thing:—Manicate, when interwoven into a mass that can be easily separated from the surface.
1900 B. D. Jackson Gloss. Bot. Terms 152/1 Manicate, applied to pubescence so dense and interwoven that it may be stripped off, ‘like a sleeve’.
1959 H. I. Featherly Taxon. Terminol. Higher Plants 36/2 Manicate, covered with a pubescence so thick and interwoven that it can be stripped off like a sleeve.
