Origin: A borrowing from Spanish Etymon: Spanish maquiladora.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish maquiladora (1971) < maquilar to assemble (see maquila n.) + -dor , agent nominal/adjectival suffix (see -or suffix) + -a, feminine gender marker, as a noun such as fábrica ‘factory’ is understood.
In Mexico: a factory or workshop owned by a U.S. or other foreign company, which employs low-cost local labour to assemble goods (esp. electronic equipment or clothing) from imported components, and then exports the completed products to the company's country of origin.
