单词 malva
释义

malvan.

Brit. /ˈmalvə/, U.S. /ˈmælvə/
Inflections: Plural malvae, malvas.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin malva.
Etymology: < classical Latin malva mallow. Derivatives exist in most Western European languages, e.g. mallow n., maul n.2, maw n.2, French mauve (see mauve n. and adj., and compare mauveine n.), German Malve, Welsh malw (16th cent.).Classical Latin malva and ancient Greek μαλάχη mallow (which appears to have received the ending -χη secondarily, probably through association by folk etymology with μαλακός soft: see malaco- comb. form) may be independent borrowings from a Mediterranean language: a Semitic origin has been proposed (compare Hebrew mallūaḥ , believed to mean ‘sea orache’). It is argued in Archivo Glottologico Italiano (1955) 40 that malva is etymologically identical with ancient Greek μῶλυ moly n.1
A mallow (see mallow n.); spec. a plant of the dicotyledonous genus Malva, of the family Malvaceae, the members of which are found chiefly in Europe and temperate Asia and are characterized by having an epicalyx of three bracts enclosing the calyx and one-seeded nutlets arranged in a flat whorl round a central axis. Also (in form Malva): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 687, after his use in Genera Plantarum (1737) 308.
