Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Spanish. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Italian malvasia; Spanish malvasía; Portuguese malvasia.
Etymology: < Italian malvasia (mid 14th cent. as malvagia ) < Byzantine Greek Μονεμβασία , the name of a city (and its vicinity) in the Peloponnese, also used as a generic name for sweet wines from Crete and possibly from the Eastern Mediterranean generally (Greek β was pronounced /v/ by the 9th cent.). In some quots. perhaps via Spanish malvasía (1517) or Portuguese malvasia (18th cent.), both probably < Catalan malvasia (1403). Compare earlier malvoisie n., malmsey n.
= malmsey n.; a variety of white grape, and the wine (dry and sweet) produced from it, grown widely in Iberia and Italy. Also malvasia de Madeira (cf. malmsey madeira n. at malmsey n. Compounds 2).
