Etymology: < the (reduplicated) syllable /ma/ characteristic of early infantile vocalization: see mama n.1Mam is largely superseded by mum n.2 in Southern English, and mom n. in U.S. usage.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Mam.
Etymology: < American Spanish Mam in sense 2, Mames (plural) in sense 1 (1818 in the source translated in quot. 1823 at sense 1) < Mam Mam, self-designation, lit. ‘grandfather, ancestor’.
