Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese mambu.
Etymology: < Portuguese †mambu (16th cent.), apparently < a Dravidian language; compare Kannada bambu , Tamil vampu , and Malayalam vampu . Compare French mambu (1659 in the passages translated in quots. 16621) and bamboo n.A form with initial m- has not been traced in any language of India, despite being attributed to the inhabitants of India by Portuguese writers of the 16th cent. such as Garcia de Orta and Christoval d'Acosta; compare also:1596 J. H. van Linschoten Itinerario lviii. 82/2 Oock is op alle de custe van Malabar veel dick riet, en principalijck aende custe van Choramandel, welck riet wordt vande Indianen Mambu genaempt, en vande Portugesen Bambu.
