Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mamelon.
Etymology: < French mamelon rounded hill (1797; c1560 in Middle French in sense ‘nipple’) < Old French, Middle French mamelle (see mamelle n.) + -on , diminutive suffix (compare -oon suffix). Compare slightly earlier mamelle n. 2. Compare also pap n.1 3, and the geological use of mammillated adj. With sense 2 compare also slightly earlier mamelonated adj.
