Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mammal n., -iferous comb. form; Mammalia n., -ferous comb. form.
Etymology: Either < mammal n. + -iferous comb. form, or < Mammalia n. + -ferous comb. form.Attributed to E. Charlesworth (see quots. 1839 at sense 1, 1850 at sense 1), but Charlesworth seems to have used the form mammiferous (see mammiferous adj. 2), which was perhaps silently altered by Lyell.
Geology.
1. Containing mammalian remains; esp. in Mammaliferous Crag n. = Norwich Crag n. at Norwich n. 2c. Now rare.

1839 C. Lyell in Mag. Nat. Hist. 3 315 I shall pass on to the consideration of the crag of Norfolk, or ‘mammaliferous crag’ as it has been termed by Mr. Charlesworth.
1850 D. T. Ansted Elem. Course Geol. xiv. 351 Mr. Charlesworth has named this the Mammaliferous Crag, and it well deserves the name, as presenting numerous mammalian remains embedded in a regular stratum.
