Etymology: < French manicordiom (a1472 in Middle French), manichordion (1593 in Middle French) < post-classical Latin monochordium (15th cent. in a British source; alteration of monochordon monochord n.: compare -ium -y suffix4), with first element remodelled after main hand (see main n.3) or classical Latin manus (see manus n.1): compare slightly later Middle French, French manicorde manichord n., and note at that entry. Compare Portuguese manicordio (16th cent.), medieval Greek μονοχόρδιον (13th cent. or earlier).
Obsolete.
