Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian manicotti, manicotto.
Etymology: < Italian manicotti, plural of manicotto muff (a1587; compare post-classical Latin manegotus sleeve (1401 in a source from Bologna)), probably < manico (see manche n.) + -otto, augmentative suffix.
Large tubular pasta shells (collectively); (also) a dish consisting of these, usually stuffed with cheese, tomatoes, meat, etc., and served with a sauce.
