单词 manille
释义

manillen.

Brit. /məˈnɪl/, U.S. /məˈnil/
Forms:

α. 1600s malillio, 1600s mallillio, 1800s malilla.

β. 1700s manilio, 1700s manill, 1700s manillio, 1700s–1800s menille, 1700s– manille, 1800s manilla, 1900s– menel.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: French manille; Spanish malilla.
Etymology: Partly < French manille (1696 in sense 1; only attested from 1883 in sense 2, and from 1893 denoting the ten of each suit; 1660 in a Spanish-French dictionary in forms malille and menille glossed as nine of diamonds), and partly < its etymon Spanish malilla the second most valuable card in certain games (1604) < mala , spec. use in same sense of the feminine of malo bad ( < classical Latin malus : see mal- prefix) + -illa -illa suffix. The French form manille (and probably hence the English β. forms) probably arose by dissimilation, perhaps influenced also by main hand; compare also Catalan manille < Spanish. As quot. 1781 at sense 1 suggests, the card is probably called ‘bad’ because, although of low value, it becomes powerful and dangerous when its suit is trumps.
