Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. mammato-cumulus Brit. /maˌmeɪtə(ʊ)ˈkjuːmjᵿləs/, /məˌmeɪtə(ʊ)ˈkjuːmjᵿləs/, U.S. /məˌmeɪdoʊˈkjumjələs/.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin mammātus ; mammate adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < either classical Latin mammātus or mammate adj. + -o- connective.
Meteorology. Now rare.
Forming names of clouds which have rounded festoons on their undersurface, as mammato-cirrus, mammato-cumulus.

1939 Meteorol. Gloss. (Meteorol. Office) (ed. 3) 129 The lower surface of certain cloud sheets sometimes has an udder-like or mammillated appearance. This structure is distinguished by the adjective ‘mammatus’ or the prefix mammato, e.g. mammatocumulus.
