Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maumeterie.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman maumeterie (also malmettrie ), reduced form of mahumetterie idolatry, heathendom (early 14th cent.) < Anglo-Norman mahumet (Old French mahomet , mahommet : see Mahomet n.) + -erie -ery suffix: compare -ry suffix. Compare Mahometry n.With the γ. forms compare post-classical Latin mamentria (early 15th cent. in a British source). In some forms perhaps influenced by Mammon n. N.E.D. (1906) enters this under maumetry and gives the pronunciation (mǭ·mėtri) /ˈmɔːmɪtrɪ/.
