Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mammonetus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mammonetus a kind of simian, perhaps a baboon or macaque (c1255 in Albertus Magnus) < mammon monkey (perhaps < the use of mammon Mammon n. as the name of a devil: for the association of monkeys with devils compare e.g. ape n. 6, devil n. 2c, and satyr n. 2) + -etus -et suffix1. Compare Middle Dutch mamonet a kind of monkey (1287), Italian mammone ‘a kind of Cat of the mountaine’ (Florio, 1611), ‘a marmoset, a monkey, a cat of the mountain, or a wild cat’ (Baretti, 1760), now specifically a macaque.
