单词 matronalia
释义

Matronalian.

Brit. /ˌmatrəˈneɪlɪə/, U.S. /ˌmeɪtrəˈneɪljə/, /ˌmeɪtrəˈneɪliə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Matronalia, mātrōnālis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Matronalia (5th cent. in Latin scholia, earlier in Plutarch (1st–2nd cent. a.d.) as Hellenistic Greek Ματρωναλία ), use as noun of neuter plural of classical Latin mātrōnālis matronal adj. Compare post-classical Latin Matronales (early 3rd cent.), short for Matronales feriae, denoting the same festival, and French matronales (1701).Ovid ( Fasti 3. 234ff.) puts the origin of the festival at the time of the Sabine wars, when the Sabine women gathered in Juno's shrine and decided to place themselves between the two armies (see quot. 1579). The feast was celebrated on the 1 March, the beginning of the year in the calendar of Romulus; moreover, spring with its associations of new growth was an appropriate season for a festival concerned with fertility. On this day the young Latin women had set up a temple on the Esquiline Hill to Juno Lucina, goddess of childbirth (see Lucina n.). Juno also had the title Juno Matrona (see matrona n.).
