Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mātr- , māter , -onymic comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin mātr-, māter mother (see matri- comb. form) + -onymic comb. form, after patronymic n. and adj. Compare post-classical Latin matronomicum (5th cent.), Hellenistic Greek μητρωνυμικόν , Italian matronimico (a1729). Compare earlier (isolated) matronymical adj.
