Brit. /ˈmatəmɔː/, U.S. /ˈmædəˌmɔr/
Forms: 1600s matamorre, 1700s matamore, 1800s– matamora, 1800s– matamoro, 1900s– mattamore.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: French matamore; Arabic maṭmūra.
Etymology: < French matamore (1617), †matamorre (in the passage translated in quot. 1695) and its etymon Arabic maṭmūra < ṭamara to cover up, bury. Compare massymore n.The form in quot. 1873 is unexplained. It has the form of Spanish matamoros braggart (the derivation of which frommatar to kill and moro Moor is suggestive), but the work cited has no other Spanish connections. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mætămōə·ɹ) /mætəˈmɔə/.
Now rare.
