Origin: A borrowing from Pidgin Delaware. Etymon: Pidgin Delaware Manétto.
Etymology: < Pidgin Delaware Manétto god, spirit < Unami (Delaware) manə́t:u and Munsee (Delaware) manə́to:w, subsequently influenced by French manitou (1613) ( < Old Montagnais manito:w and Old Algonquin (Ojibwa) manito:) and by Ojibwa, all < Proto-Algonquian *maneto:wa supernatural being.
Among some North American Indians: a deity or spirit (of good or evil) which is an object of religious awe or reverence. In extended use: anything regarded as having supernatural power, as a fetish, etc.
