Etymology: < classical Latin mani-, combining form of manus hand, here taken in sense ‘foreleg’ (compare mani- comb. form, and classical Latin use of manus in sense ‘forepaw’) + trunk n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·nitrɒŋk) /ˈmænɪtrʌŋk/. Entomology.
