Dial. records /mæŋkɪ/ in the sense ‘heaving with maggots’ from one location in Berkshire.Perhaps < mank adj. + -y suffix¹; or perhaps a variant of mangy adj. after manked adj.; or perhaps < mankie n., which occurs in such collocations as mankie gown (for the shift in meaning from ‘made of (a particular) material’ to ‘of inferior quality’ compare tawdry n. and adj.). Alternatively, perhaps compare use of French manqué manqué adj. in sense ‘defective, spoilt, unsatisfactory’:1841 W. M. Thackeray Misc. Ess. (1885) 402 I never yet had a good dinner at Véfour's: something is always manqué at the place.
