Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: man n.1, tiger n., mantegar n., manticore n.
Etymology: < man n.1 + tiger n. Compare French homme-tigre (a1784 in sense 1 in Diderot Satire Première: compare quot. 1986 at sense 1). In senses 3 and 4 alterations, by folk etymology, of mantegar n. and manticore n. respectively, which may also have influenced the development of the other senses.
