单词 awem
释义

awemv.

Forms: Old English awemman, late Old English awæmman, Old English awemd (past participle), early Middle English awæmme, early Middle English awemme, early Middle English awemned (past participle, perhaps transmission error).
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: a- prefix1, wem v.; English gewemman
Etymology: Originally (i) < a- prefix1 + wem v. In later use (ii) probably also partly a reflex (with reduction of the prefix; compare a- prefix2) of Old English gewemman (early Middle English ȝewemme ) to defile, corrupt, pollute, impair, cognate with or formed similarly to Old High German giwemmen , kawemman to corrupt, spoil, pollute < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of wem v.In Old English, gewemman is significantly more common than awemman (including its derivatives). In use as past participle in Middle English perhaps partly also a variant of iwemmed , past participle of wem v. (compare a- prefix2 2).
Obsolete.
1. transitive. To corrupt or defile (someone or something). In later examples with specific reference to the violation of a woman's chastity or virginity.
