Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Portuguese. Or perhaps a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Portuguese manaquim, manequim; Dutch mannekijn.
Etymology: Perhaps < Portuguese manaquim manakin bird, variant of Portuguese manequim mannequin (18th cent.) or its etymon Middle Dutch mannekijn manikin n. Compare French manakin (Buffon).In form manikin probably after manikin n.
Any of numerous small, fruit-eating, passerine birds of the tropical American family Pipridae, the males of which are brightly coloured and have complex courtship displays.The taxonomic position of the manakins is unclear; they are frequently placed in the family Tyrannidae and sometimes in the family Cotingidae. These birds are quite distinct from mannikins (mannikin n.).rock, white-bearded manakin, etc.: see the first element.

Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps an error for manacle n. in sense ‘gauntlet’ (compare French manique armlet, gauntlet: see manacle n.) or coined by S. R. Meyrick (see quot. 1824) on the basis of that word.
Medieval Armour. Obsolete. rare.
A form of glove said to have been worn by soldiers in the 12th cent. (Perhaps Meyrick's invention.)
