Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manche.
Etymology: < French manche handle of a tool (c1170 in Old French), neck of a violin (Cotgrave, 1611) < post-classical Latin manicus handle (in undated glosses; c1188 in a British source), ultimately < classical Latin manus hand (see manus n.1), perhaps as a back-formation < manicula plough-handle (see manacle n.). Compare Portuguese mango handle of a flail or whip (13th cent.), Spanish mango handle (14th cent.), Italian manico handle (1320), neck of a stringed instrument (1561).
Music. rare.
The neck of a violin, guitar, or similar instrument.
