Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin marginalia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin marginalia (16th cent. or earlier), use as noun of neuter plural of marginalis marginal adj.Compare earlier use of post-classical Latin marginalis as (feminine) noun: see marginal adj. In form marginalium an inferred singular, after e.g. memorandum n., datum n.
With plural agreement. Notes, commentary, and similar material written or printed in the margin of a book or manuscript. Also (in extended use): notes, comments, etc., which are incidental or additional to the main topic.Quot. 1819 is likely to have been written by Coleridge.
