Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin margravius , -ate suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin margravius margrave n. + -ate suffix1. Compare French margraviat (1750 in form marckgraviat). The corresponding Dutch and German terms are markgraafschap and Markgrafschaft.
