Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Martinique , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Martinique (see Martiniquais n.) + -an suffix. With the α. forms, compare -ian suffix. Compare slightly earlier Martiniquais n.French dictionaries do not record an adjective in -ien corresponding to the α. forms; the form Martiniquienne denoting a woman in quot. 18911 at sense A.α. may be formed analogously with the feminine forms of other French words with this ending.
