Etymology: < meat n. + herring n., probably after early modern Dutch maetgens haringh (see mattie n.), with the first element wrongly identified as related to meat n. Compare matjes herring n.
Obsolete.
Probably: a young herring in which the roe or milt is not fully developed; = mattie n.
