Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: marimba n., -ula suffix.
Etymology: Probably < marimba n. + -ula suffix. Cuban Spanish marímbula (1975 or earlier) is probably < English.
A large variety of lamellaphone with a wooden box resonator, used as a bass instrument in some Caribbean popular music, esp. in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Cf. marimba n. 2.

1931 Morning Call (New Jersey) 13 Feb. 21/3 Lopez..has added a new instrument to his orchestra's complement. It's a Cuban marimbula. The player plucks thin slabs of steel and what weird sounds he gets.
