Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mariposa.
Etymology: < Spanish mariposa, originally ‘butterfly’ (1326), perhaps < María, pósate ‘Maria, alight’ (perhaps in a nursery rhyme context) < María (see Mary n.1) + pósate , 2nd singular imperative of posar pose v.1 In sense 1 probably, and sense 2 certainly, from the resemblance to a butterfly.
1. In full mariposa lily, mariposa tulip. Any plant of the genus Calochortus (family Liliaceae), the members of which have brightly coloured flowers and are native to western North America and Central America; spec. one with large, erect, cup-shaped flowers.Horticulturalists often divide the genus into three sections: mariposa lilies sensu stricto; star tulips, with erect star-shaped flowers; and globe tulips, with nodding globular flowers.
