单词 mash-rule
释义

mash-rulen.

Brit. /ˈmaʃruːl/, U.S. /ˈmæʃˌrul/
Forms: Middle English maschscherel, Middle English mashsterell, Middle English masshe rolle, 1600s mashrule, 1600s meash rule, 1700s mash-roll, 1800s mash rule, 1800s– mash-rule.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mash v.1, -erel , -rel suffix.
Etymology: Probably < mash v.1 + -erel, variant of -rel suffix, with the second element largely remodelled after rule n.1 or roll n.1 Compare mashel n. (which is attested only in quot. 1440).In form mashsterel in quot. 1425 the second element has probably been replaced by an unrecorded Middle English *sterel little rudder ( < steer n.2 + -el suffix2); compare mash rudder n. at mash n.1 Compounds 2 and Swedish mäskroder (17th cent.). Compare also in the 15th cent. and apparently in a brewing context the form masshrodel , with uncertain second element (perhaps compare rod n.1, rudder n. or raddle n.3):1446 Inventory in H. Fishwick Hist. Parish Lytham (1907) 79 J trogh of ston, ij masshrodels, ij gylefattes, ij gretemaltarkes. Compare also mash oar n., mash rudder n., mash-staff n. at mash n.1 Compounds 2.
Now English regional.
