Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit māṣa.
Etymology: < Sanskrit māṣa (see mash n.3): the measure was originally based on the weight of the urd bean. Compare mace n.3
South Asian.
A unit of weight, legally fixed in 1833 in British India as 15 grains (0.97 grams).
