Origin: A borrowing from Occitan. Etymon: Occitan Mategrifun.
Etymology: < Old Occitan Mategrifun (a name reputedly invented by Richard I of England (whose cultural background was Occitan) for a siege engine used at Messina in 1190: see quot. c1200) < matar mate v.1 + Grifun , variant of Grifon Griffon n.1In Middle English forms also showing influence of folk etymology from Old French, Middle French mal , mau mal n. and de de prep.
Now historical.
A type of siege-tower, probably of larger than normal size, used by Richard I.Descriptions of a projectile-throwing device by later writers seem to be based on a misunderstanding of the nature of the machine.
