Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mater lectionis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mater lectionis (1609 (in Drusius Opuscula quae ad Grammaticam spectant Omnia de Recta Lectione Linguae Sanctae), or earlier) < classical Latin māter mother n.1 + lectiōnis , genitive singular of lectiō reading (see lection n.), probably after post-biblical Hebrew 'ēm qĕrī'āh (also 'ēm haqqĕrī'āh), lit. ‘mother of the reading’.Drusius identifies the letters as ‘Aleph, Vau & Ioth’ (aleph, waw, and yod); the same letters are referred to as ‘mothers’ in David Qimḥi Sefer ha-Mikhlol (Hebrew Grammar) (early 13th cent.; printed in 1532), with the explanation that no word or letter can be pronounced without them. Qimḥi attributes the use to the author of Sefer Yetsirah (3rd or 4th cent.) but there ‘mother’ is applied kabbalistically (rather than phonetically) to the letters aleph, mem, and shin.
A letter which performs the function of a diacritical mark; (spec. in Hebrew writing) a consonantal sign which indicates that a vowel sound is to be supplied.
