New Zealand.
Any of several New Zealand evergreen shrubs or small trees of the genera Pittosporum (family Pittosporaceae) and Myrsine (family Myrsinaceae); esp. (more fully black matipo) P. tenuifolium, with black bark and clusters of dark purple flowers, and (more fully red matipo) M. australis, with dark red bark. Cf. mapau n.
