Etymology: < marl n.1 + pit n.1 Compare post-classical Latin marleputtus (c1260 in a British source), and Middle Dutch marleput (1354; Dutch regional (West Flanders) maarlput, Dutch mergelput).Attested earliest as part of minor place names and topographical surnames. Compare also earlier use as a field name, Merleput (Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby and Ormesby St Michael, Norfolk; 1220; now lost).
