U.S. regional (chiefly Midland).
1. Either of two American shorebirds of the genus Limosa, the Hudsonian godwit, L. haemastica, and esp. the great marbled godwit, L. fedoa.

Etymology: Probably short for marlinspike n. (from the shape of its pointed snout: see below). Compare marlin n.1
Any of various very large marine food- and game-fishes of the genera Makaira and Tetrapterus (family Istiophoridae), having the upper jaw elongated to form a pointed snout.
