Etymology: < post-classical Latin marmaritin (classical Latin marmarītim ), accusative singular of marmaritis a plant with supposed applications in conjuration, said by Pliny to be named from its habitat in marble quarries in Arabia < Hellenistic Greek μαρμαρῖτις < μάρμαρος (see marble n.) + -ῖτις -itis suffix.Hellenistic Greek μαρμαρῖτις is first attested in Philo Byzantius (c200 b.c.) with sense ‘made of marble’. It is earliest attested as a plant name in Pliny, where it is identified as ἀγλαοϕῶτις, perhaps peony. In Pseudo-Dioscorides it is identified as fumitory (likewise Latin marmaritis in T. Johnson Gerard's Herball 1633). Post-classical Latin marmoraria is identified as acanthus by L. Fuchs (mid 16th cent.), as is Middle French marmoritide by J. J. Vuecher (1597), and similarly Latin marmaritis and marmoraria in Phillips's New World of Words (ed. 6, 1706).
