Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek μάρμαρος , -ized suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μάρμαρος marble (see marble n.) + -ized suffix, probably after French marmoriser to convert to marble (1845 in a geological context, 1584 in Middle French in sense ‘eternalize’; < classical Latin marmor marmor n. + French -iser -ize suffix). Compare the later re-formation marmorized adj., and Hellenistic Greek μαρμαρίζουσα πέτρα glittering rock (used of gold-bearing quartz).
