Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Greek μαρμαίρειν , -o- connective, -lite comb. form¹.

Etymology: < marm- (in ancient Greek μαρμαίρειν to shine: see marble n.) + -o- connective + -lite comb. form¹, after e.g. chiastolite n. The form marmalite (see quots. 1822¹, 1849) is probably influenced by ancient Greek μάρμαρος marble (see marble n.), unless an error (compare quot. 1822²).

Geology.

A pale green foliated serpentine or chrysotile with a pearly lustre.
