单词 marmoration
释义

marmorationn.

Brit. /ˌmɑːməˈreɪʃn/, U.S. /ˈˌmɑrməˈˌreɪʃən/
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin marmorātiōn- , marmorātiō , marmor , -ation suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin marmorātiōn-, marmorātiō marble covering or paving (one isolated attestation in Apuleius) < marmorāt- , past participial stem of marmorāre (see marmorate adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1.In sense 1 the word appears to be a dictionary word in English and may be taken from earlier Latin dictionaries rather than directly from the classical Latin usage, hence the discrepancy in sense. Sense 2 is probably independently < classical Latin marmor marble n. + -ation suffix.
