单词 medlar
释义

medlarn.

Brit. /ˈmɛdlə/, U.S. /ˈmɛdlər/
Forms: late Middle English meddeller, late Middle English medlier, late Middle English middiller, late Middle English 1600s medeler, late Middle English–1500s meddeler, late Middle English–1800s medler, late Middle English– medlar, 1500s medlor, 1500s mydler, 1600s meddler.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French medler.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French medler medlar tree (13th cent. in Old French; also in Anglo-Norman in forms meddler , medlere ) < medle medle n. + -er (see -ar suffix2). Compare post-classical Latin mespilarius (1171). Compare earlier medle n.The earlier English word for medlar is open-arse n., which is attested in Old English. Like this word, the use in sense 3 probably alludes to the shape of the medlar fruit. Use denoting the fruit as well as the tree is common in all periods in English, although Johnson (1755) and many subsequent lexicographers list the use denoting the tree first. The compound medlar tree is common from the mid 16th cent. onwards.
1. The fruit of the medlar (see sense 2), which resembles a small brown-skinned apple with a widely gaping apex and persistent calyx-lobes. (In quot. 1588: a fruit resembling this.)In colder countries the fruit must usually be allowed to become somewhat decayed or ‘bletted’ before it can be eaten raw or used to make jam or jelly.
