Origin: Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Merdrignac.
Etymology: Probably < Merdrignac, the name of a town in Brittany in which the material is likely to have been originally produced; compare dowlas n., lockram n.1, olderon n., poldavy n., and tregar n. Compare later medrinaque n.In quot. 15881, the word appears to be understood as a count noun with plural in -es ; it is uncertain whether the form in quot. 15882 should be similarly construed.
Obsolete.
A kind of coarse canvas made of hemp woven with warps and wefts of double or treble thread, apparently introduced into England from Brittany, and used in the manufacture of sails, garments, etc. (see quots.). Cf. poldavy n.
