Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew maśkīl.
Etymology: < Hebrew maśkīl wise (in post-biblical Hebrew ‘an enlightened person’, title given to proponents of the Haskalah), participle of hiśkīl to understand < śāḵal to be prudent.In plural form Maskilim after the Hebrew plural form.

A progressive, reformist, or intellectual Jew; spec. a proponent of the Haskalah.
