Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maskinongé.
Etymology: < French maskinongé (1709) < Ojibwa ma:škino:še: (1886 in forms mackinonge, micikinonge (c = /ʃ/)) < ma:š, ma:ši ill-formed + kino:še: northern pike.The form maskinonge is the preferred headword in Dict. Canadianisms (1967). Most 20th-cent. Canadian dictionaries define the word under the spelling muskellunge, although including maskinonge also as a variant.
