Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Masochist.
Etymology: < German Masochist (1890) < the name of Sacher-Masoch (see masochism n.) + -ist -ist suffix, after Masochismus masochism n. Compare French masochiste (1896).
A person who exhibits or is given to masochism. Also in weakened sense: a person who enjoys doing something that appears painful or frustrating.
