Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian marmo, tinto.
Etymology: < Italian marmo (see marble n.) + tinto dyed, coloured (see tinto adj. and n.2). Mechanics' Mag. (1844) 40 31 records that the process was invented by B. Zobel, a Bavarian-born artist and craftsman who employed it in the production of decorative table tops for George III and others in Britain. In form marmortinto after classical Latin marmor marmor n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (māɹmŏɹti·nto) /mɑːməˈtɪntəʊ/.
Decorative Arts. Obsolete.
A decorative process in which sand of various colours is distributed in marbled patterns on a surface and fixed, and perhaps given a smooth finish, with gum.
